LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that corrects myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During this procedure, the surgeon creates a thin flap using either a microkeratome blade or a second laser, than gently reshapes the cornea using the Eximer laser. The flap is then repositioned to cover the area that was reshaped by the laser.
Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), also referred to as PRK, is another Eximer laser procedure that is an alternative to LASIK. It differs from LASIK in that no flap is created during the procedure. It is often a more suitable choice for patients with corneas too thin for LASIK, or in cases where creating a flap carries an undesirable risk.
Because LASIK/PRK is a complex procedure, careful, professional guidance is required to determine whether you are a candidate, and selecting a reputable, experienced surgeon to perform the procedure is critical. The doctors at Ross Eyecare have been involved with LASIK since its inception in the Atlanta area and have been working side by side with some of the most recognized LASIK surgeons in the southeast.
